A York County first-grader got himself suspended from school for a day for showing classmates an online game featuring a cartoon of a near-naked Paris Hilton.
A girl told the teacher, the teacher sent the boy to the principal, and the principal called his mother.
Seven-year-old Dylan Poitrinal says he thought he would be grounded, like he is now. He has no TV, computer, X-box or CD player privileges for a month.
But both Dylan and his mother, Kate Wirt, say they were surprised by the one-day suspension handed down by Red Mill Elementary Principal James DeLisio. Wirt says the Web site was not sexually explicit. She says, “I thought the worst until I went home and looked at the site myself and saw what it was… It was a cartoon likeness of Paris Hilton where you changed her outfits.”
Wirt says she thinks the district should be accountable because her son was able to access the site. She says parental controls on the family’s home computer would not allow him to see it.
“I would hope the school’s filtering system would at least be as effective as mine, if not more so,” Wirt said.
